2. Working Principle

Hot water from the process or condenser system enters the upper distribution system and is evenly sprayed over the fill media.

As the water flows downward, ambient air passes through the tower and comes into direct contact with the water. A small portion of the water evaporates, removing heat from the circulating water.

The cooled water is collected in the basin and returned to the central cooling system.

Hot Water → Water Distribution → Fill → Air-Water Contact → Evaporative Heat Rejection → Cooled Water

Open-circuit cooling towers rely on direct water-to-air contact and evaporative heat transfer, which is the fundamental difference from closed-circuit towers.
